Niagara County Jail Roster

The Niagara County Jail Inmate Roster is a public resource that allows you to find out who is currently in custody in Niagara County, New York. On the NiagaraCourt.us website, you can find publicly available information about current and recently released inmates. Additionally, data is available through the official sheriff's website, personal visits to the jail, and phone inquiries. The roster search allows you to check an individual's custody status, view charges, and find out the booking date. The roster is maintained by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, is regularly updated, and is posted on the official Niagara County website. This tool provides transparency of the criminal justice system for the public.

Search Current Inmates in Niagara Jail

There are several ways to find out if a specific person is being held in the county jail.

Online Search

  1. Visit NiagaraCourt.us to search for publicly available information about county court records and inmates.
  2. If the person has been transferred to the New York State system, use the DOCCS Incarcerated Lookup tool — it covers individuals serving sentences in state correctional facilities.
  3. To check arrest warrants issued by the probation service, view the Niagara County Probation warrants list.
  4. The state police publish their own list of wanted persons on the Wanted and Missing page.

You will need the person's full legal name for the search. The booking number, if known, will expedite the process. If the official jail roster is presented as a list without a search field, use the browser's Ctrl+F function (or Cmd+F on Mac) to find the last name on the page.

Juvenile offenders are not displayed in the public roster.

Phone Inquiry

Call the jail directly. The operator can confirm if the person is in custody if you provide the full name and date of birth. Contact information for local law enforcement agencies in the county can be found on the Niagara County police contacts page.

In-Person Visit

You can visit the jail lobby or public information window. Bring identification with you.

Find Niagara Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created at the moment a detained person is officially processed into the jail. It is the first document that records a person's custody.

During the booking process, the following data is recorded:

  • Unique booking number
  • Date and time of intake
  • Charges filed
  • Arresting agency (city police, sheriff, state police, etc.)
  • Physical description and photograph
  • Bail information, if set

Access to these records can be obtained in several ways. The online jail roster usually displays basic booking data for individuals currently in custody. For more detailed information or past booking records, submit a public records request to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office.

If the person has already been transferred to a state facility, the DOCCS Incarcerated Lookup tool will show the current custody status, intake date, and facility. State-level criminal history records are maintained by the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) — New York residents can request their own criminal history through this agency.

Search the Niagara Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The roster supports two main search methods.

Search by Last Name

Enter the last name in the search field or use the Ctrl+F function in your browser. A few tips:

  • Check the spelling — even one letter error can result in no results.
  • Try spelling variations if the last name has non-standard transliteration.
  • Add the first name to narrow the results if the last name is common.

Search by Booking Number

The booking number is a unique identifier assigned during processing. It provides an exact result without the risk of confusion with namesakes. This number is usually given to the detainee or their relatives during the intake process.

If the Search Yields No Results

  1. Ensure the name is entered correctly, without extra spaces.
  2. The person may have already been released — the roster only shows those in custody at the time of the request.
  3. There may be a delay between the actual arrest and the record appearing in the system.
  4. If the person was detained by state police or federal agencies, they may be held in another facility. Check the New York State Police database.
  5. Contact the jail by phone — the operator can manually verify the information.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Niagara

The Niagara County inmate roster is updated periodically but not always in real-time. Between the time of arrest and the record appearing in the online system, it can take from several hours to a day — this depends on the time of day, staff workload, and data processing speed.

Main limitations to be aware of:

  • Publication delay. Recently booked individuals may not appear for several hours after arrest.
  • Record disappearance after release. When a person is released from custody, their record is usually removed from the active roster. The roster is not an archive of all past bookings.
  • Data entry errors. Sometimes names are entered with errors or in a non-standard format, complicating the search.
  • Limited information. The public roster shows basic data — name, charges, booking date. Detailed case information is available through the Niagara County Clerk's Office or through a public records request.

For archived booking records, contact the Sheriff's Office in writing with a request under the New York Freedom of Information Law (FOIL). Records that have been sealed by court order are not subject to disclosure and will not appear in any public search.

The County Probation Service also provides information on pre-trial services aimed at reducing the number of inmates in Niagara County Jail.
